Confronting the Soul Thief

Turning away from Andrew, Martel dropped his large shovel and kneeled over the recently unearthed grave. He gazed into it with the indescribable gleam of insanity in his eyes.
“So many people underestimate the power of mathematics. We see its workings day after day, yet most take its true potential for granted. Behind these every day workings lies the key to unlocking all the mysteries this universe has to offer. Even the secrets behind life… And death.”
The wind picked up as thunder rolled furiously in the skies above. There was a tainted feeling that came with this unnatural gust and it made every muscle in Andrew’s body feel weak and useless. Slowly a decrepit hand reached out from the shadows of the open grave and clutched at the edge of the muddy hole. Its long and brittle fingernails dug into the earth as a second hand emerged in the same sickening and twisted manner as the first. Andrew, unwilling or incapable of tearing his eyes away from the horrid display, began stumbling backwards in a hasty retreat. He was no longer in control of his fear gripped body and barely noticed his feet leave the slick wet grass. For what seemed like a nauseating eternity Andrew drifted in darkness with only a sense of momentum and speed that lead him uncontrollably downwards.
